Dave Matthews Blasts Trump Administration and ICE After Minnesota Shooting: ‘These Are Dark Times’

Dave Matthews is taking aim at the Trump administration in a fiery message following the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis.

The 59-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee shared a lengthy Instagram video on Friday (Jan. 9), criticizing President Donald Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after Good was killed by an ICE officer earlier in the week.

“I don’t want my taxes to pay for ICE, to masked thugs to roam our streets and terrorize our communities and rip families apart,” Matthews said while walking through his neighborhood on his birthday. “We should be taking care of each other. We should be minding each other. We should be housing the homeless. We shouldn’t be, you know, throwing people to the ground.”

The clip comes after the Wednesday (Jan. 7) death of 37-year-old Good, who was shot while in her car during an ICE operation. Footage from the incident shows that seconds before the shooting, Good tried to drive away from the confrontation. Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have said she was attempting to “run over” the officer.

“Which brings me to Renee Nicole Good,” Matthews continued. “Murdered in front of her fellow citizens in Minneapolis, murdered in the streets. And no matter what narrative this administration is trying to sell us, we can see the videos.”

He added, “Maybe if they show you one and they slow it down and they tell you where to look, you might think, maybe there’s a chance, maybe there’s a chance that the gunman was felt threatened. But from most angles, near and far, it looks like she was trying to get away, and he shot her three times in the head, murdered in cold blood.”

In the wake of Good’s death, Minneapolis residents have rallied to mourn her and protest ICE’s presence in the city. Mayor Jacob Frey called for federal agents to leave, saying, “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”

Matthews also criticized U.S. military operations in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro “to steal their natural resources,” as well as Trump “threatening to do it to other countries, claiming somehow sovereign nations belong to us.”

The singer-songwriter closed the video by calling members of the Trump administration “deeply dishonest people,” adding, “These are dark times. F—k ICE.”
