Imagination exercise: Getting over the mountain

Imagination exercise: Getting over the mountain

Some problems seem so big that they block a clear view of a solution. The following imagination exercise, developed by Brigitte Dorst, can help to gather strength and ideas to master a difficult task.

This is how the imagination exercise works:

1. Make sure you have 15 minutes of privacy in a place where you feel safe and comfortable.

2. Sit upright and relaxed.

You can close your eyes or let them rest half-open on the floor half a meter in front of you. Feel the contact with the surface. Lose the weight of your body. Take a few deep breaths, relaxing a little more with each exhale.

3. Let the image of a mountain arise in your imagination,

who embodies the difficulties you are currently struggling with. Visualize how the problems that are bothering you right now have piled up into a mountain. Let the mountain work its magic on you.

4. One thing is clear: you can’t get around the mountain.

You have to overcome it to move forward. But you may not be able to do it alone.

  • Think about how you might find a mountain guide. Maybe an experienced crisis counselor, a therapist or a good friend?

5. When you are ready, carefully open your eyes againif you had closed it. Make a drawing or take a few notes.
