Bad Bunny cast in his first lead acting role in drama ‘Porto Rico’

Bad Bunny has been cast in his first lead acting role in the forthcoming movie Porto Rico.

The Grammy-winning artist, who recently made headlines for his Super Bowl halftime show, has already appeared in movies such as Caught Stealing, Bullet Train, and Happy Gilmore 2. He was also briefly attached to the Marvel film El Muerto in 2022, before the film was shelved by the studio.

Now, Deadline reports that he will lead the cast of Porto Rico, described as “an epic Caribbean western and historical drama” directed by rapper René “Residente” Pérez Joglar in his feature directorial debut. The cast also includes Hollywood stars Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem.

The story is said to be based on the life of José Maldonado Román, a Puerto Rican revolutionary known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle), who fought against colonialism in the 19th Century.

“This film sits in a tradition of films we deeply love,” Norton said in a press release, “from The Godfather to Gangs Of New York, that both thrill us with visceral drama and iconic characters and eras while also forcing us to face up to the shadow story under the American narrative of idealism.”

Bad Bunny is currently riding high from the success of his Super Bowl halftime show, which embraced the culture of his native Puerto Rico as well as other nations within The Americas, which offered a message of unity with the slogan: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love”.

US President Donald Trump criticised the show, although footage released online shows Trump’s Super Bowl viewing party showing Bad Bunny’s performance, as opposed to an alternative show headlined by Kid Rock.

The show, which was the fourth most watched Super Bowl half-time performance in history, saw a 200 per cent spike in travel interest to Puerto Rico, while a recent survey found that more Americans think Bad Bunny “better represents” the US than Donald Trump.
